Let me start by saying, pea’s are legumes, so techinically this soup is not considered paleo.  Although many of us, including myself, consume peas and cashews, another lovely legume, but neither is considered an approved food on the Paleolithic Diet.  There are times when I make food that, simply put, is not considered Paleo, and that’s usually when I am making something for someone else.  After making a ham for Easter, my dad asked me to make pea soup.  How could I say no with everything that man does for me??!! Although he, for the most part, follows a Paleo Diet, he is not ready to give up some of the staples he grew up on because he believes in moderation.  Every time there was a left over ham bone in our family, my grandmother cooked up a pot of pea soup.  With that in mind, I decided to nix the idea of wild mushroom and ham soup, and add this delicious dish to a my list of slow cooker recipes.  You can also try my “hearty ham chowder” that I made with a leftover ham bone from a party I had a while back, it is to die for.

This soup is definitely a heartier version of pea soup because I like generous portions of ingredients when I cook.  When I polish off a ham, I usually leave about two cups of meat still on the bone, but this particular ham bone, like most, did not have that much meat on it, but that’s okay because I always add a ham steak to my pea soup to make it extra delicious and rich in flavor.  This incredibly delicious, rich and hearty slow cooker soup, is virtually foolproof, and tastes unbelievable.  If you want to surprise your family with great flavor combinations, this is definitely the dish to do it with..

Slow Cooker Ham and Pea Soup

serves 6

Ingredients

  • ham bone (optional)
  • 4 cups ham steak, diced
  • 16 ounces dried peas
  • 2 shallots, diced
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 3 carrots, peeled and sliced
  • 3 celery stalks, sliced
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon Balanced Bites Smoky Spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 dried chilis
  • pinch of pepper
  • 4 cups chicken broth + 2 cups for later

Instructions

  • Combine all the ingredients accept the remaining 2 cups of chicken broth in a slow cooker
  • Cook for 8 hours on low
  • With 15 minutes cook time remaining, add the remaining 2 cups of chicken broth
